Key Points: A) Our spiritual clothes must fit the occasion B) We must take off the dirty clothes of our old life C) We must put on the right and fitting spiritual outfit of a Christian
Spiritual clothes must fit the occasion - Col. 3:1-4 What is the occasion for born-again believers? Being risen with Christ! We are to keep seeking (present tense of to seek). This encompasses our thinking and our doing; set our affections on the things of Christ, not of the earth. because we are now dead to this world, and His Father is our Father. Christ is our life, and we will appear with Him in glory.
Take off the dirty clothes of the old life - Col. 3:5-11 So we must kill that in our nature that belongs to the earth; take off the inappropriate clothes and put on the new ones. The dress code has changed! Our sins are not yet gone because of our sinful nature, but they no longer define us. "...Put on the NEW man..."
We are to put on the right and fitting spiritual outfit of a Christian - Col. 3:12-17 Put on the emotions of mercy; kindness, humbleness, meekness, patience (2 Peter 3:9; Isaiah 40:11). And to all these virtues, add love. This is the bond that puts it all together, a bond of "perfection" (spiritual maturity). "Let the Peace of Christ dwell in us richly in wisdom" - to rule our lives (Philippians 4:6). Whatever we do, do in the name of the Lord Jesus - "giving thanks to God and the Father by Him." Note Colossians 4:1-2; Isaiah 26:3; Psalm 116:65; and finally, Colossians 3: 16-17. A thankful heart and lips crowds out the negative distortions of this world from our lives.
